Widows vying to win documentary contest

May 30, 2019 | 10:40 PM

Four women who tragically lost their husbands are now trying to win a documentary contest .

Melissa Jacobs lost her husband several years ago, and has wanted to tell a story about widows and their strength through pain.

“Ultimately we all go through different life changes and sometimes it’s hard to pick yourself up and keep going and I think these are all tales of you know coming from down inside the trenches and picking yourself back up, but then even doing something with it,” she said.

She contacted three other widows and began writing a book in November 2018, but later thought about doing a documentary.

” I thought I need to do this really well, so I contacted Toronto Film School and they convinced me to enroll in a two- year Toronto Film School Video production course,” she said

And it was through one of her teachers that she heard about the Storyhive production contest which provides funding for select film projects.

A total of 379 documentaries have entered the contest and only 30 will get funding.

The documentaries that obtain the most votes win.

Voting for the contest ends Friday May 31 at noon.
