A Vernon family is trying to help others as they recover from a tragedy.

Businessman Sherman Dahl and his wife Katie are bringing the ordained Buddhist monk, Guan Cheng, to Vernon to speak about overcoming emotional challenges.

The event will be at the Schubert Centre June 17 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Dahl’s lost their daughter Emily to suicide in January.

Sherman Dahl, a local businessman,  says he went to a couple of lectures by Cheng, who is based in Richmond B.C., and says they really made sense.

“So I really wanted — and I think Emily would have wanted — other people, like some of her peers (to hear him). I really wanted students and teachers and councillors. I’m not picking on anybody, but Emily was in the hospital, and they gave her a thin piece of paper in terms of what she should do and some pills. And I take a lot of responsibility — there’s a lot we should have done as parents — but I just don’t think that’s the solution,” Dahl tells Beach Radio News.

Deng will focus on the care of life, and how to be self-compassionate, hopeful and resilient in challenging times.

Dahl says he and his wife are trying to find a way to fulfill their daughter’s wishes.

“Emily is gone, and she is in good place, and instead of crying and crying and crying, I think what can you do about this? And I think there’s some people who could really use some help.”

Guan Cheng is also a radio talk show host and author.

“The lecture is really not a religious thing. It’s more a way of life and a way of hopefully helping other people who may be suffering from emotional challenges,” adds Dahl.
