Pot shop getting a second chance

A Vernon pot shop application that was defeated by council is now getting a second chance.

Council voted to reconsider the application at their in-camera meeting on Monday.

“Staff recieved some additional input that was not received in the original package and they want to bring that back for council to also have that for their consideration for their application,” said Director of Corporate Services Patti Bridal.

The proposed store would be located at 2813A- 35th street.

The application drew significant opposition, with nearby residents delivering a signed 43-person petition to the city against the shop.

Alice Heward and the Vernon Pensioners Accommodation Society started the petition out of concerns for safety.

” If they buy their stuff there they are going to be in this area and the apartment building down over there where the transients are going to stay in, they would be using this area a lot. We have alot of seniors who are scared because they have been attacked by people, some of them have been robbed,” she said.

Council defeated the motion to support the application at their May 13 Council meeting.

After the decision was made, Heward said that she was thrilled to hear that the city listened.

“I’m just so thrilled that they did that because lots of times the little people don’t get heard really and I just felt that they weren’t doing enough and I just know that a lot of people in this building will be gratful for that.” she said.

The reconsideration of the cannabis application is expected to take place at the June 10 council meeting.
