Armstrong City Council hopes to hear from staff in November how to plan for cannabis retailing.

Mayor Chris Pieper says council want to hear from the public as well.

” We will be hosting a public meeting after the elections. We’re encouraging residents to e-mail us with their concerns.”

A date for a public hearing has yet to be set.

“We will have a doodle poll on our website as soon as the staff can put it on there. And they’ll be accumulating more information as we go forward as this rolls out.”

Pieper says it’s been difficult to get a handle on the matter because both the provincial and federal governments have been slow in letting municipalities know what they can and can’t do.

The city is starting to hear from potential store operators.

“The last couple of weeks we’ve had lots of people enquiring. But I think they’re mostly lookiloos. The application fee for the provincial government is 7500 bucks, so that definitely limits a few people from applying.”

The city has yet to set any cost for a business licence.
