No Need For More Ice Rinks, Aquatic Upgrades Maybe

Oct 5, 2018 | 5:25 PM

There is no plans in the near future to pursue more ice rinks in Vernon, despite what some user groups feel is a lack of ice time.

Doug Ross, Recreation Services Director for the City, says the usage throughout the day currently isn’t high enough to warrant more facilities.

“What we would need is, we would need another sheet of ice from 4 o’clock to 7 o’clock because that’s when everyone wants to play. But unfortunately you can’t build a sheet of ice that will only be open for three hours every afternoon,” says Ross.

Ross expects it will be several years until there is enough demand to consider new facilities.

Greater Vernon’s Master Recreation Plan is getting close to being finalized.

The report looks at the needs over the next 15 years.

Doug Ross from the City of Vernon, says the plan makes 30 recommendations, one of which calls for improved indoor aquatic facilities.

“That’s kind of a broad way of saying that we need to add another pool, but we also need to maybe update the one that we have,” says Ross.

Ross says it’s been 25 years since the current pool was given a significant upgrade.
