Vernon School District Expects Strong Year

The Vernon School District won’t know until October how enrolment has gone for this new school year.

The District’s Maritza Reilly says overall numbers are looking good compared previous years.

“Our elementary school numbers are down slightly with our secondary numbers up. So overall that gives a positive number overall.”

The new school year brings a new curriculum for grade ten students.

The Vernon School District had already implemented it from kindergarten to grade nine.

Maritza Reilly says it’s a new way to foster creativity in students.

“These are students who are thoughtful and able to learn and think critically, are creative, flexible, self-motivated, able to make their independent decisions, cooperative, principled and respectful of others regardless of differences.”

She says they’re learning core competencies that employers are looking for, including communicating, thinking and working both collaboratively and individually.

The curriculum also includes indigenous content and perspectives across all subjects.

The school district is optimistic it won’t be looking at teacher shortages this school year.

Maritza Reilly says Vernon has been on the radar of a lot of teachers.

“Vernon has done really well with our recruiting of experienced teachers. So those with five to ten years experience. And they’ve come from all over BC and Western Canada.”

Reilly says with the exception of a few very specialized positions, all teaching positions have been filled.
