It’s the beginning of the end for a Vernon landmark.

A crew has started the process to decommission and demolish the 80 year old Civic Arena.

City spokesperson Nick Nilsen says the first part is to salvage any items that can be used elsewhere.

“Some of the things would include the boards and the clock. The clock is being re-purposed. We’re going to shuffle it to the Priest Valley Arena. The boards will be going to Coldstream to be re-purposed for the lacrosse box there,” Nilsen tells Beach Radio News.

Memorabilia from the arena will go to the museum, with some used in a display at the new Kal Tire North Arena.

Nilsen says it’s too soon to say when the building could be demolished

“That will be up to the contractors. There will be a certain amount of preparation we will have to on the inside of the building before we can even think about the outside of the building.”

City council has yet to make a decision on what the land will be used for after that, but suggestions have included turning it into a park, or using it for a public facility.
