Canada women top Netherlands, advance to gold-medal game at wheelchair hoops worlds

OTTAWA — Canada’s women’s wheelchair basketball team will be playing for gold on Saturday.

Arinn Young had 34 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists, while Kady Dandeneau led all scorers with 35 points and Canada defeated the Netherlands 85-73 in the wheelchair basketball world championship semifinals on Thursday at TD Place.

Canada will next play the United States, which defeated Great Britain 71-61 earlier on Thursday in the other semifinal. Canada won the last of its five world titles back in 2014 in Toronto.

“I’m just so grateful to be here,” said Young. “I’m an athlete that has got the opportunity to play on home soil previously in a final, and I’m incredibly fortunate, and that’s what I’m riding on.”
