RDNO Area B Director seeking re-election

The four-term Director of RDNO Area B will have his name back on the ballot.

Bob Flemming says he will run in the fall election in a bid to retain his seat representing the Swan Lake Commonage area.

First elected in 2011, Fleming said a lot has been accomplished under his watch. Recently those include seeing construction begin for the North Okanagan Wastewater Project.

“[The wastewater facility] will bring community sewer service to the Swan Lake corridor in electoral areas B and C, portions of the Township of Spallumcheen and potentially in the future to OKIB lands,” Fleming stated in a release.

“This project will bring major benefits to the environment, especially Swan Lake as well as to the local economy and to agriculture as the treated wastewater will be used on Spallumcheen agricultural lands which are currently water stressed. Despite large construction cost inflation that occurred over the last five years while we waited for [Ministry of Environment] approval, over 80 per cent of the costs now estimated at about fifty million dollars are being paid through senior government and outside agency grants.”

Other highlights for Fleming include initiating and helping create new parks and trails, such as the water front parks at Swan Lake, the Sncecmalqtn Agricultural Park and Greater Vernon Athletic Park; and securing the title of Trails Capital of B.C. for Greater Vernon.

“I hope to continue looking for new opportunities to enhance outdoor recreation in our community,” Fleming stated.

Looking ahead, the incumbent director said he wanted to work on enhancing water supply security in the Greater Vernon Water (GVW) utility.

“The GVW master water plan will be up for renewal soon and I hope to be part of the efforts to create workable solutions to water supply security while being mindful of costs.”

Votes will be case for the local general election October 17.
