A morning fire in central Kelowna has caused significant damage to a detached garage and a nearby multi-unit residential building.

Kelowna Fire Department crews were called to the 1000 block of Stockwell Avenue at about 5:50 a.m. Friday after reports of a fire in a garage in the back alley.

Assistant fire chief Jason Bedell said firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Crews brought the fire under control quickly, but the garage and adjacent residential building sustained major damage.

Some residents have been placed in the care of Emergency Support Services following the fire.

Kelowna RCMP officers also attended the scene and helped ensure people in nearby homes were safely evacuated.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed what happened before the fire or has information that could assist investigators to contact the Kelowna RCMP.
