Concerns for fish health increasing as drought and water scarcity persists
The ongoing drought and water scarcity issues in the Okanagan have raised concerns about fish populations.
The B.C. River Forecast Centre gave the Okanagan Drought Level 5 and High Water Scarcity ratings on Thursday, which were the highest ratings on both those scales. Those also marked the fourth and third weeks where the region had those high severity ratings.
With these ongoing conditions, the River Forecast Centre said there were growing concerns for fish survivability in the Okanagan and the Southern Interior.
“Streamflows continue to decline to record-low levels and water temperatures continue to rise, increasing stress on fish populations and requiring fish salvage efforts in many streams, particularly where water temperatures exceed 20 C,” the agency reported.
