Vernon wraps up response to Bradley Creek wildfire

Aug 20, 2026 | 4:09 PM

The City of Vernon has concluded its emergency response to the nearby wildfire.

The Bradley Creek wildfire sparked August 1, and over the following weeks the city worked alongside regional, provincial and local partners to support evacuees, coordinate resources, and keep the community informed.

However, after several days with the fire classified as Being Held, indicating it is unlikely to spread any further, the city’s Emergency Operations Centre stood down Wednesday, August 19. Kal Tire Place, where the Emergency Support Services was being offered, returned to normal operations and hours.

The city noted it’s emergency management team is still monitoring local and provincial conditions and working with partners to address wildfire situations, and adding its emergency program is maintaining a “stand-ready EOC” that could quickly be scaled up or down to respond to emergencies or disasters.

“Since the Bradley Creek wildfire began, Vernon has supported thousands of evacuees through our host-community Emergency Support Services (ESS) response,” Vernon Fire Rescue Services Chief, David Lind, said.

“Our ESS teams, volunteers and community partners worked together to provide accommodation, food, essential supports and trusted information, while helping people navigate a difficult and uncertain time. As our host-community response comes to an end, I want to thank everyone who stepped up to support evacuees. As a community, you once again took on a difficult task and did your very best to help people during a time of need.”

Over the course of the response, the city supported more than 2,600 evacuees with group lodging, assistance to access ESS, and adjusted city services including free access for evacuees to the Vernon Recreation Centre pool.

The city noted the wildfire risks persist and urged people to remain vigilant, be cautious of their activities, and take steps to prevent fires from starting and spreading.

As of time of publication the Bradley Creek wildfire was still Being Held, with B.C. Wildfire Service patrolling the perimeter and extinguishing hot spots.
