BC Hydro increasing electricity capacity with Revelstoke project

Jun 17, 2026 | 3:05 PM

B.C. Hydro will be increasing its electricity capacity with upgrades to a generating system in the Southern Interior.

The utility provider said it had begun construction of a sixth unit at the Revelstoke Generating Station, which should add 500 megawatts of capacity to the system. Upgrades will also be made to Units 1 through 4 at that system.

Another 500 megawatts of capacity will be added with the modernization of a station near Chetwynd and Fort St. John in Northern B.C. These combined 1,000 megawatts will translate to an increase of 7 per cent to B.C.’s electricity supply.

“We are taking significant action to optimize B.C.’s clean-energy system, including building a brand-new sixth generating unit at the Revelstoke Generating Station, modernizing Units 1-5 at the G.M. Shrum Generating Station, and making other upgrades at sites throughout the province,” Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, stated.

“These investments are the best and most cost-effective ways to unlock more power from the system we already have – making every electron count across our public dams, substations, and transmission and distribution lines.”

B.C. Hydro will be covering the cost of the upgrades to the Revelstoke system, which was estimated at around $60-million, with 180 jobs expected to be created for the work by 2029.

Construction of the Revelstoke Unit 6 project was underway as of time of publication, and expected to be completed and in service by December 2032.
