Science Centre reopening following structure fire

The Okanagan Science Centre in Vernon is going to reopen its doors next week.

The building was closed to the public ahead of the May long weekend due to a fire that was started on the exterior of the building, causing minor fire damage and some smoke damage to the structure.

The Centre said the restoration crews and staff had since been working to ensure the building was safe for visitors, and would be able to open its doors to the public once again on Tuesday, June 9.

“While this experience has highlighted some of the challenges of operating as tenants within an aging facility, it has also reinforced the importance of our long-term vision for a new Okanagan Science Centre,” Dione Chambers, Executive Director of the Okanagan Science Centre, stated.

“As we prepare to reopen following remediation efforts, we are also continuing to work toward the development of a new and expanded science centre that will better serve youth, families, schools, and our growing region for years to come.”

The Centre, next to Polson Park on Hwy6. plans to reopen with regular hours, allowing visitors to come see the new Pterosauria: Evolution of Flight exhibit.

The basement of the building will remain closed to the public as restoration work in that area will be ongoing after the centre reopens.
