Man charged after “fentanyl superlab” found near Valleyview pleads guilty, given 12 years in jail

A Kelowna man charged after the 2024 breakup of what was described at the time as a “fentanyl superlab” found in the Valleyview area has been given a 12-year jail sentence.

Both Alberta Justice and the Crown prosecutor from Edmonton say Stephen Mogg was given the sentence on May 21 in Valleyview court after pleading guilty to a charge of producing a controlled substance.

A second charge for possession for the purpose of trafficking was withdrawn.

ALERT said in a news release issued on Nov. 8, 2024, that this lab was “estimated to have regularly produced bulk quantities of fentanyl” for at least two years.

ALERT also called the lab “a significant source of fentanyl in Alberta and Western Canada.”

A search done on Oct. 2, 2024, turned up seven kilograms of fentanyl, 4,200 litres of suspected fentanyl precursor chemicals, and 1500 litres of chemical waste.

The estimated street value of the fentanyl seized was $700,000. ALERT says one kilogram of fentanyl potentially contains 500,000 fatal doses.

ALERT also found and destroyed lab equipment.

Investigators also said at the time that they believed this lab was connected to an organized crime ring that was involved in production, distribution and importing chemicals.
