West Kelowna RCMP renew appeal for information in Big White sexual assault case

May 29, 2026 | 10:16 AM

West Kelowna RCMP is renewing its appeal for information in a historical aggravated sexual assault investigation linked to Big White Ski Resort dating back to 2002.

The incident occurred on Dec. 27, 2002, when police were called to an assault involving a 19-year-old woman from Australia who was working in the area at the time. Investigators said the victim suffered serious injuries.

Police said the suspect fled the scene on foot and was described as a man with brown hair wearing a yellow jacket, or a jacket containing yellow colouring. Despite extensive investigative work at the time, the suspect was not identified.

The case has remained open under file 2002-58983, and investigators say a recent review has prompted renewed attention to the file. Officers say advances in investigative techniques have created new opportunities to re-examine historical cases.

“Advancements in investigative techniques have significantly enhanced our ability to revisit and progress historical investigations,” said Const. Ash Puri, media relations officer with the West Kelowna RCMP. “We remain committed to pursuing all available leads, and we are hopeful that someone may come forward with information.”

Investigators are urging anyone who may have information — no matter how small or outdated it may seem — to come forward, noting that memories can change over time and witnesses may now feel more comfortable speaking.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP.
