Local children marked storm drains in environmental advocacy project

Young children in Vernon have become waterway advocates after taking part in a project aimed to protect local ecosystems.

Children aged 30 months to five years enrolled in Raising Starts Preschool participated in the Only Rain Down the Drain campaign, a national storm drain marking program where students applied reflective markers to unmarked storm drains.

The Raising Stars students did this work in the East Hill area, with the goal of reminding residents that anything left of the ground, including litter and automotive fluids, could wash into the region’s aquatic habitats.

The program also gave the students hands-on experience doing conservation and environmental work, and taught the children how human actions can impact the environment, and how people can be more responsible to ensure nature is protected.

“This kind of project is a fantastic way to show the children that our preschool is part of the community as a whole,” Samantha Sewell, Founder and Administrator of Raising Stars Preschool, stated.

“It helps keep our local parks, waterways, and community clean and respected, while showing the children that they have the power to make a real difference right now.”
