Vernon’s housing construction sector took advantage of the mild winter and started out 2026 strong.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) recorded 20 housing project starts in Greater Vernon this past January.

That was up from five starts during the same month the year prior.

CMHC also stated that there were 46 housing units completed in January, though did not have comparative figures from the previous year.

The local housing projects started in January included 14 semi-detached homes and six single family houses. The projects completed this past January involved 44 row houses and two single homes.

Elsewhere in the Okanagan, Kelowna recorded 203 new housing project starts and 789 completions in January. CMHC did not provide comparable figures but did say that housing starts were down on an annual basis, while completions were up.

Meanwhile, the province and the nation also saw housing construction soar in January.

CMHC said there were 4,141 housing starts recorded across B.C. in January, almost double the 2,165 starts seen in the same month the year before.

Across Canada there were 16,088 housing starts, which was also well above CMHC’s recorded starts of 12,979 in January of 2025.
