Football fans have started the countdown to the second annual Kal Tire Kalamalka Bowl.

The UBC Thunderbirds will take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears in an exhibition college football match at the Greater Vernon Athletics Park on Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.

Last year’s event was well received by the teams and spectators with over 2,000 people on hand and organizers expect an even larger turnout this year.

“Last year, people were not sure what this was all about and came with a curiosity. Now people know they will be coming to see the highest level of amateur football in Canada and have a great time on a Wednesday evening in Vernon,” Sean Smith, Kalamalka Bowl society president, said.

Tickets are on sale through Eventbrite which can be accessed through kalbowl.com

Numbered bleacher seating is $30 a ticket, while general admission is $12 per person. Spectators with general admission tickets are welcome to bring a lawn chair as the ticket allows access to the game without seating.

The public is reminded that there is limited parking spots available and are encouraged to carpool.

A well-known sports broadcaster will be part of the event.

Farhan Lalji of TSN will be attending the game and will also be co-hosting the Breakfast with Angus show on the morning of the game with Angus Reid at UBCO.

Lalji will also be part of the honouring the Okanagan Sun with their national championship trophy between the third and fourth quarter at the Kal Tire Kalamalka Bowl.

Organizers are thanking the sponsors for their support.

“Last year Kal Tire stepped up to be the title sponsor of this local event and this year, they signed on for a three year-deal. This commitment from Kal Tire ensures that Vernon will be able to commit to hosting a first-class Canadian U Sports football game in our town for years to come. Kal Tire once again is showing us that they are not just a leader in tire sales around the globe, but they are also a caring leader in their local community of Vernon,” Malcolm Reid, Kalamalka Bowl Society vice president, said.
