The Vernon Yacht Club is bringing back the Okanagan Charity Regatta in the name of food security.

The sailing event held on Okanagan Lake June 2-4 will see sailors of all abilities compete in fun and challenging events to benefit the United Way B.C. and Community Foundation of the North Okanagan (CFNO).

Both organizations are committed to addressing the growing demand for adequate and nutritious food for people in the community.

“We are absolutely delighted that the Vernon Yacht Club has chosen to split the proceeds from their event between Community Foundation North Okanagan and United Way as we work together to take on food security issues,” Leanne Hammond, executive director for CFNO, said in a release.

“Community foundations are all about shared leadership, partnership for social good, and recognizing the challenges so many in our communities are up against. No one should have to choose between paying their rent and feeding their children.”

The “Sailing for Fuller Plates and Hearts” event will begin with a welcome race part way up Okanagan Lake from Whiskey Island to Vernon Friday, June 2. It will be followed by registration and a barbecue.

The races will begin Saturday, June 3, and continue through Sunday, June 4. Racers will be in the running for awards in their respective classes.

The fundraiser has launched and will run until the regatta.

Okanagan Charity Regatta organizers noted there are opportunities to participate by donating towards a meal, supporting the online auction in mid-May, or sponsoring a boat.

All funds raised through these actions will go directly to the charities.

More details on the regatta can be found here.
