Vernon-Monashee race will be decided by mail-in ballots

10:50 p.m.

The Vernon-Monashee riding will be decided by mail-in votes, and likely won’t be settled until around mid November.

After the election day and advance votes were counted, three term Liberal incumbent Eric Foster was leading Harwinder Sandhu of the NDP by less than 200 votes.

With 121 of 122 polls reporting, Foster had 35.06 per cent of the vote while Sandhu had 34.13 per cent.

Keli Westgate of the Green Party was third with 16.22 per cent and Kyle Delfing of the BC Conservatives was fourth with 14.59 per cent, well above the party’s provincial total of 2.35 per cent.

Foster says having four candidates in the race made a big difference with Delfing getting the right wing support he did.

“No question about it. If you add it to the percentage I’m sitting at right now, I’m basically where I was in 2017,” said Foster.

Foster was asked why the Conservative candidate got stronger support than expected.

“The party possibly, the name. I really don’t have an answer for that. But we heard people asking questions about voting conservative, ‘Are we voting for Erin O’Toole? We’d rather vote for Erin O’Toole than Trudeau,’ and you try to explain we have nothing to do with the federal Liberal party. The numbers are there, it’s close and there is no question we’re going to have to wait until the mail-in ballots are counted,”Foster told Vernon Matters.

Elections BC says it will take until Nov. 16 to declare all the election results official, as the mail-in ballots won’t be counted until 13 days after election day and they have to be verified.

A total of 8,747 mail-in vote packages were sent out to residents in Vernon-Monashee by Elections BC.

Vernon Matters also reached out to Harwinder Sandhu for comment.

The Vernon-Monashee riding could be in for a tight race.

The poll tracking website Canada 338 listed Vernon-Monashee as a “toss up,” putting both Eric Foster of the Liberals and Harwinder Sandhu of the NDP at 39 per cent and Keli Westgate of the Greens at 17 per cent.

Kyle Delfing of the Conservatives is tracking at around 4 per cent.

If there is indeed a change, it would be a major story as the Vernon-Monashee riding, formerly called Okanagan North, which has been represented by centre right parties, either the Liberals, Social Credit or Reform, for over 30 years.

Three years ago, Foster won his third term with 47 per cent of the vote, defeating Barry Dorval of the NDP by a margin of 18 percentage points.

Keli Westgate of the Green Party was third with 21 per cent of the vote.
