New record for COVID cases: 274

A new daily COVID-19 record has been set in B.C. with 274 new cases.

Twelve (12) of the new cases are in the Interior with more than 200 in the Fraser Health region.

There are 57 active cases in IH with two people in hospital, one in ICU.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, said social events are the main reason for the surge.

“Social gatherings are where we are seeing significant transmission of COVID and the impact is far reaching.” Weddings and other celebrations are proven to be high risk,” said Henry.

An outbreak at a French school in Kelowna (Ecole de L’Anse-au-sable) now has five cases.

“Steps were taken by public health, working with the school, to ensure they can contain the spread to the involved cohorts,” said Henry on B.C.’s first outbreak at a school.

The measures include 160 school members at home self isolating, and the school working with families to ensure educational requirements can be met.

Henry said since schools restarted Sept. 8, of the 600,000 children and 35,000 teachers and staff in the system, there has been 213 exposure events in over 2,000 schools, with six clusters (more than one person with Covid in school), and this is first outbreak.

“That helps us put it into perspective that we are not seeing the return to school causing an amplification in our communities, but it reflects what is going on in our communities,” stated Henry.

There are 1,920 active cases in B.C., with 71 people in hospital and 24 in critical or intensive care.

There are no no new deaths (total still 253).

Currently 4,425 people are under active health monitoring.

There are no new health care or community outbreaks.

B.C.s case total is now at 12,331.

Case counts by health region:

  • 4,260 Vancouver Coastal
  • 6,725 Fraser
  • 249 Island
  • 644 Interior
  • 365 Northern
  • 88 people who reside outside Canada
