The Vernon Vipers are taking on more than just their valley rivals as they try keep the hockey business up and running.

“It’s been challenging without revenue from ticket sales, and it’s a different atmosphere for the players as well,” Todd Miller, the Vipers’ vice president said. “We have really good sponsors and a lot of them have hung in there with us. We live in an incredible city, so that has helped a lot.”

Miller told Vernon Matters they aren’t like most other businesses and have written and re-written COVID-19 plans dozens of times to deal with challenges and changes.

“We have the billets, the players, staff, travel and the logistics of everything to stay on track,” Miller said.

The team would like to see fans return to the building, but that will be at the direction of the B.C. Hockey league and provincial health officials.

The Vipers are playing an exhibition series called the Okanagan Cup against cohorts West Kelowna, Salmon Arm and Penticton.

The Vipers play the Vee’s Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Penticton. You can follow the action on Hockey TV, or listen live to Graham Turnbull on 107.5 Beach FM.
