UPDATE: 2:30 p.m.

Good news to report on two new wildfires in the Okanagan, both in the Westside Road area northwest of Vernon.

One near Six Mile Creek at the road’s north end that started from the spread of a structure fire is being held at 0.1 of a hectare.

“That [being held] means we don’t anticipate any further spread beyond the existing boundary,” said Madison Smith, fire information officer.

The fire was not on Okanagan Indian Band reserve land.

There are four B.C. firefighters still on site.

Another fire near Stewart Creek by La Casa Resort on the south side is also being held at spot size (0.1 hectare) with no structures threatened and eight wildfire personnel on site.

“It was moving (burning) west away from houses,” said Smith.

B.C. Wildfire Crews are actioning a new wildfire in the North Okanagan.

It is at the north end of Okanagan Lake in the Six Mile Creek area about 5 kilometres from Westside Road.

The Wildfire Service says it started as a structure fire that spread into the bush.

“It is 0.1 hectares in size, and it is out of control at this time,” said Madison Smith, fire information officer.

A helicopter is bucketing water at the site with four provincial firefighters on the ground.

“There was a lot of hazardous materials in the yard so our crews were having to work around those materials,” said Smith.

Smith said the fire is located on the Okanagan Indian Band reserve, but the band told Vernon Matters it is off the reserve.
