Folks on Spokes ready to roll for summer

Jul 20, 2020 | 5:55 AM

Vernon’s Folks on Spokes program is expected to get underway July 27 and continue until the end of October.

The city-run program helps businesses with the clean-up of discarded needles and garbage in local hot spots.

The project is staffed by people with lived experience of substance use, and will be expanded to two shifts per day (8-10 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.)

“It also creates a sense of belonging and pride for participants, and builds relationships between peers, businesses and the wider community,” said the city’s website.

The Community Action Initiative (CAI) has approved the redirection of the funding granted February 3,2020 originally planned to support a coordinator position for the Folks on Spokes (FOS) program.

The CAI Community Grants Manager has approved the redirection of up to $25,900 to support honoraria for the participants of the peer program instead of the coordinator position, according to information provided to city council by administration.

This will allow the program to continue in 2020 with the same model that was developed and launched in March 2019.
