Work underway at BX Elementary

Jul 15, 2020 | 9:42 AM

If you haven’t noticed, work is underway on ten new classrooms at BX Elementary on Silver Star Road.

The almost $12-million project will create a 240-seat addition, nearly doubling the size of the school.

“With 10 new classrooms on the way, students are one step closer to saying goodbye to portables at BX Elementary school,” said Education Minister Rob Fleming. “I can’t wait to see every student at BX learning in classrooms that keep them fully connected to the great school community they have in Vernon.”

The province is providing $11.1 million towards the cost while the Vernon Board of Education is contributing $425,000.

The project is expected to be ready for students in September 2021.

BX Elementary is currently operating at nearly 150 per cent capacity, with many students spending their entire days in portables.

The government said enrolment is expected to grow in the coming years.

“These classrooms will allow all students and staff to be in one building and will enhance the inclusive and collaborative learning environment at BX Elementary, said Vernon School District board chair Robert Lee.
