Supports police chiefs' plan

Premier says restart plan showing positive early signs

B.C.’s premier says he is optimistic about how the province’s economic restart has gone so far.

“On balance, I’m pretty excited about where we are. The past four months have been extremely challenging for British Columbians. We’re far from out of the woods,” John Horgan said.

Horgan says B.C. continues to see relatively low numbers of new Covid cases, and the evidence shows more and more people are coming out of their homes and participating in the economy, going shopping and to restaurants.

“We’ve seen examples like a half a billion dollar investment by CN Rail in British Columbia. Private sector investments like that are critical to our success going forward. And there are increasing numbers of companies that are looking at British Columbia at having successfully flattened the curve, having a skilled, dynamic, multi cultural workforce that can help them advance their business interest,” Horgan said.

The premier also said the province has seen 24 television and movie-of-the-week productions return to B.C.

Horgan told the media he supports a call from police chiefs across Canada for the federal government to decriminalize possession of illicit drugs, saying it could help reduce drug deaths and would free up police resources for other duties.

“If not now, when?” he said noting the Covid pandemic and the overdose crisis.

“Anything that we can do to reduce the deaths and reduce the dependence, and to free up law enforcement to do other things, I support,” the NDP leader said.

On another issue, Horgan didn’t think a public inquiry was the right plan to address issues in long term care homes, saying that can be done through dialogue with families, public health officials, operators and health authorities.
