Six new Covid deaths in B.C.

British Columbia is reporting six more deaths from the Covid-19 virus since Friday.

Dr. Bonnie Henry said the deaths were all at long term care homes, four in the Vancouver Coastal health region, and two in the Fraser region.

“One was a person who died in June and the death, in review, has been attributed to Covid,” stated Henry, provincial health officer.

“We know the price that Covid 19 has taken from us as a whole community, but to lose six people, all in long term care, over three days is a source of enormous grief for the families involved, the caregivers and the communities involved. We share that sense of loss and grief with them, and all 183 people, and their families that have passed away since the beginning of the Covid pandemic,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix.

B.C.’s updated death toll from Covid is now at 183.

Dr. Henry reported 31 new Covid cases since Friday, for a provincial total of 2,978.

One of the new cases is in Interior Health (203 total).

There are now 166 active cases in B.C., with 16 people in hospital and four in critical or intensive care.

A total of 2,629 people have fully recovered.

Case counts:

  • 1,008 Vancouver Coastal Health
  • 1,570 Fraser Health
  • 132 Vancouver Island Health
  • 203 Interior Health
  • 65 Northern Health

There are no new health care outbreaks with four active outbreaks.

Even though it’s a federal decision, Dr. Henry was asked if she can see the Canada U.S. border reopening any time soon.

“I can not see vacation travel this summer from the U.S., given the rates that we’re seeing and how widespread it is in the U.S. right now,” said Henry.

Henry added some U.S. states reopened “too much too soon” and with some people not following the guidelines, it’s led to widespread transmission.

Numbers released recently by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control show the group with the largest percentage of cases in B.C. has been those between 50 and 59, at 18 per cent.

The most deaths, at 42 per cent, have been in those between 80 and 89.

There have been 49 cases of coronavirus in kids under the age of 10, but all have recovered.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
