'these last few months have been hard'

Mayor passes on thanks in Father’s Day message

Jun 20, 2020 | 1:45 PM

The mayor of Vernon is thanking residents for their efforts during the Covid pandemic while also sending out warm wishes to families for Father’s Day.

Victor Cumming said in a statement it has been good to see the community and province begin to reopen in recent weeks, which he attributes to the collective work of the public to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“There are no two ways about it – these last few months have been hard. We have experienced a lot of change. For many of us, this has included the cancellation of plans to spend time with family or friends. Some of us haven’t seen our parents in a very long time. However, our time apart has been necessary to protect ourselves, each other and our communities,” said Cumming.

Cumming said despite hardships and uncertainty, he’s seen and heard many examples of genuine kindness, generosity and compassion.

“Thank you again, Vernon, for all you’ve done during this pandemic. I know this year has been trying, but together, we have made a difference. Let’s keep up this momentum. I encourage you to continue following the provincial health guidelines, remain connected with one another, and keep supporting local,” stated the mayor.

Message from Mayor Victor Cumming for Father’s Day (submitted/City of Vernon)

This Sunday is Father’s Day – a wonderful time to pause and thank all the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who have poured into the lives of those around them.

There are no two ways about it – these last few months have been hard. We have experienced a lot of change. For many of us, this has included the cancellation of plans to spend time with family or friends. Some of us haven’t seen our parents in a very long time. However, our time apart has been necessary to protect ourselves, each other and our communities.

During this time of physical separation, we’ve heard a lot of stories of people connecting with others in new and creative ways to continue strengthening relationships and form new bonds. We have seen many examples of genuine kindness, generosity and compassion. I am proud to call Vernon home and be part of what is taking place in the North Okanagan.

It has been so good to see our community and our province begin to reopen in recent weeks. This has only been made possible because of the collective work we have done – and we continue to do – to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Thank you again, Vernon, for all you’ve done during this pandemic. I know this year has been trying, but together, we have made a difference. Let’s keep up this momentum. I encourage you to continue following the provincial health guidelines, remain connected with one another, and keep supporting local.

As we slowly expand our social circles, if you will be seeing your father for the first time after a period of absence, I hope the time you have together is even sweeter than it’s been in the past.

If you are unable to be with your father in person, I hope you can still find a moment to connect with those you love and celebrate the things you are grateful for in the midst of this tough season.

Happy Father’s Day.

Victor Cumming
Mayor, City of Vernon
