36 new Covid cases in B.C., no new deaths

British Columbia is reporting 36 new Covid cases since Friday, but there has been no new deaths over that period.

There are 182 active cases in the B.C. with 13 of those in hospital and four in intensive or critical care.

There is no new cases in the Interior Health region, with the one new recent cases announced last Friday, still in hospital.

Dr. Bonnie Henry says while the lack of new cases in some areas, and the resumption of some activities, may seem like things are getting back to normal. but she cautions the pandemic is “far from over.”

“There continues to be no effective treatment and the virus will continue in our communities for many months to come. Part of the reason w have so few cases is because we have been doing our part to take the measures to keep the virus from spreading quickly,” said Dr. Henry.

She said the ongoing objective is to keep new cases low and to minimize the impact on communities, so people can get back to their lives.

“We have to actively contain any clusters rapidly which includes rapid testing of anyone who thinks they may have Covid-19.”

Dr. Henry said there is no new health care outbreaks or community outbreaks, and the Kearl Lake outbreak related to an Alberta work camp has been officially declared over with no new cases for two incubation periods.

Dr. Henry said, to this point, there have been no new cases associated with schools which returned to in-class instruction June 1.

The provincial health officer said the next phase of the province’s reopening plan will include movie theatres, spas, more parks and travel, but no dates have been set for that.
