Schools look for feedback on returning students

May 20, 2020 | 6:30 AM

The North Okanagan Shuswap School District (District 83) is reaching out to student families to get an idea how many plan to send their kids back to schools as of June 1.

Parents will have the option of keeping their children at home, and some home learning opportunities will continue on-line until the end of the school year.

District 83 is conducting a survey of kindergarten to grade 5 students, followed by one for grades 6 to 12.

“Stage 3 of the ministry plan allows for students in kindergarten to grade five to attend up to two to three days per week, with students in grades six through twelve attending up to one day per week,” said the email from Superintendent Peter Jory. “Schools will be open five days a week for children of tier 1 essential services workers and students requiring additional supports. Busing will be available with capacity limits in place.”

Jory said they are following all provincial health and safety guidelines to ensure schools are safe places to learn and to work.

“These guidelines include having no more than 50 per cent of students in attendance in grades K-5 and no more than 20 per cent of students in grades 6-12 at any given time,” he said.
