mandated government rules a factor

Yoga business shutting down, not able to survive in ‘new normal’

A popular hot yoga business in Vernon is closing its doors due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dionne Kopeck and Heather Comazzetto, owners and instructors at The Hot Room @ Studio be — which has been open almost 10 years — say the difficult decision was due to mandated government rules with the consequence of having no revenue coming in and no foreseeable dates to reopen their doors.

“Before we were forced to close our doors [in mid March] the community here at the studio was thriving,” the owners told Vernon Matters in an email. “February into March was one of our busiest months in 10 years. There is such a strict policy and procedures to maintain safe operation with the additional costs and labour that it all becomes unfeasible for our business model.”

Kopeck and Comazzetto said the capacity in which they operate gets cut by way more than half under the new rules.

“It is truly sad. So many of our members have been reaching out to us and everyone is just heartbroken that this studio and community we have built is having to close its doors,” the statement said.

The owners say the future of their industry is very uncertain.

“Our business is built on strong interactions, socialization before and after classes that are full and brimming with energy. To meet whatever the “new normal” looks like, we would certainly have to limit classes to a fragment of their former sizes, prohibit student interactions, and otherwise remove the things that make Studio be what it is.”
