Free parking in Vernon extended

May 12, 2020 | 4:29 PM

Motorists can continue to park on the streets of Vernon without having to plug the parking meters.

City council has extended non enforcement of parking meters and time limits throughout the city until July 1, 2020 in a measure that started March 31 due to Covid-related issues.

“We’ve extended the free parking until July 1 to give businesses downtown a chance to reopen and expand their services and make adjustments they want to make, and to give us a chance to put the new, more robust parking meters in,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters.

Council earlier approved spending of $225,000 to replace parking meters after 350 were vandalized in the city.

The investment includes $137,000 to purchase and replace damaged meters plus another $88,000 to buy high-strength, ductile, dome-type meters.

“We ordered the parts, and we expect those parts to arrive in the next few weeks, and we’ll then install them. We don’t want to install them without the more robust-caps,” said Cumming.
