UPDATE: Police investigate suspicious incident at public works yard

May 11, 2020 | 6:37 PM

A suspicious incident at the City of Vernon’s public works yard garnered a lot of attention Monday.

RCMP was advised of a possible incident at the works yard at 1900 48th Avenue in Vernon around 11:45 a.m. Within minutes, numerous officers attended to ensure the safety of the staff and public. A perimeter was established around the site while police conducted an investigation.

“Given it was mid-day and that 48th Avenue is well travelled, the police on scene drew the attention of many people passing by,” said Corporal Tania Finn, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “Police cleared the building and determined there was no threat on site.”

Finn said the incident did not result in the arrest of any individual.

“The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP appreciates the cooperation of the public during this incident,” Finn added.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP confirmed there was a heavy police presence near the City of Vernon works yard at 48 Avenue and Pleasant Valley Road Monday afternoon.

Police say they have been “investigating information received” and would not release further details.

One eye witness said some of the officers were in camo gear.
