The end of low gas prices?

Apr 29, 2020 | 1:34 PM

The low gasoline prices we’ve gotten used to the last while, are apparently coming to an end.

A number of Vernon gas stations have bumped their price by 20 cents a litre — from 85.9 cents to $1.05.9, but there are still some at the lower price.

Gas outlets in Langley and Fort St James have the lowest prices in B.C. at 76.9 a litre, according to gasbuddy.com.

The average price for regular gas in Canada today is 79.1 a litre, according to the price tracking website.

Michael Ervin, vice-president of consulting for the Kent Group Ltd., a petroleum consulting company in London, Ont., told the Sudbury Star, the price hikes in areas of Canada last week were due to a number of factors.

The main one was it was the first sign of increased demand for gasoline during the COVID-19 pandemic. With so much instability in the demand and supply of gas because of Canada’s economic situation, he said the gasoline industry suddenly found itself unprepared for the uptick in demand.

Ervin said the gasoline industry is also now making the switch to summer gas from winter gas (a lighter product that allows motor vehicles to start better in the cold) and it takes a little time to clear old inventories. The switchover also had an impact on gas supply.
