UPDATE: Council approves extension of no

UPDATE: Council extends no parking meter enforcement

Apr 28, 2020 | 10:18 AM

UPDATE

Vernon council has extended the non-enforcement of parking meters around the city for at least another two weeks.

Council will review the measure again at its next meeting on May 11th.

The non-enforcement of paying for meters and time limits has been in effect since March 31.

“It’s gone fine. Obviously our revenue has gone to zero, and we’ve had quite a number of employees using parking meter spots for their day parking, so that is fairly common throughout the downtown,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters.

The normal monthly revenue from parking metres is $102,000.

Original story

Vernon council will consider what to do with parking meter enforcement at their meeting this afternoon.

Council suspended bylaw enforcement at a special meeting on March 31 for all on-street metered parking and set April 27 as the date for a review.

City staff are seeking further direction on the measure, looking for a new date be set for the free parking to continue, while also noting the lost revenue.

“The non-enforcement of the on street metered parking and two hour parking zones realizes a loss of revenue of approximately $102,000 per month,” said a staff report.
