North Okanagan residents are among those extending condolences and support to the grieving residents of Nova Scotia.

A small memorial to fallen Const. Heidi Stevenson has been set up outside the Vernon RCMP detachment, site of a memorial to former Vernon Const. Jean Minguy and auxiliary Const. Glen Evely, with flowers, hearts and a message saying ‘Thank you RCMP.’

Vernon RCMP are not aware of who was behind the gesture.

Cpl. Tania Finn, media relations officer, says this morning at 10 a.m., Vernon members had a moment of silence at the flag flying at half mask outside of the detachment.

“It was in honour of, not only Constable Stevenson, but all the victims of this terrible tragedy,” Finn told Vernon Matters. “It was a very small event with only a handful of people in attendance and everyone complying with social distancing requirements. As well, it was asked that people wear red in support and many of our essential civilian staff came to work this morning wearing red shirts and jackets.”

A moment of silence was held across Canada Friday morning to remember the 22 victims of the killings, Canada largest mass shooting.

An online vigil called ‘Nova Scotia Remembers’ will start around 3 p.m. B.C. time this afternoon.

It will include musical performances and messages from dignitaries.
