Proposal to close all regional parks to be discussed

Apr 8, 2020 | 1:04 PM

Local politicians will be discussing if it’s time to close all regional parks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

That would include shutting down the Okanagan Rail Trail and green spaces like Paddlewheel Park in Vernon.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee Chair Akbal Mund said the issue will be on the agenda today, and he says he would support such closures in conjunction with today’s B.C. government announcement to close all provincial parks.

“The whole idea is social distancing,” Mund told Vernon Matters. People can still go for a walk in their neighbourhood. You don’t have to drive to a park.”

Mund said most local residents have been good about following the provincial health orders, but there have been some exceptions.

The City of Vernon has kept its parks and playing fields open so far during the pandemic, but communities like Coldstream shut parks down in late March.
