Jan 7, 2020 | 11:09 AM

UPDATE

A heavy snowfall warning has been lifted for the North Okanagan by Environment Canada, but remains for the Shuswap which could see another 10 centimetres of snow Tuesday.

There was lots of new snow overnight which is creating issues on the roads and at the Kelowna Airport today.

Unofficial estimates indicate between 10 and 25 centimetres fell around the Okanagan since Monday.

A snowfall warning remains in effect for the North Okanagan, including Vernon, and for the Shuswap.

“A pacific frontal system will give a further five centimetres of snow today. Snow will change to a few rain showers this afternoon as warmer air moves into the area,” a statement from Environment Canada said.

The Shuswap region could get another 10 centimetres today.

A travel advisory is in effect for the Coquihalla between Merritt and Hope with limited visibility due to heavy snowfall and blowing snow.

“Travelers are advised to exercise caution if considering travel and to be prepared for extreme weather conditions. Motorists should expect delays through the storm while crews and equipment clear snow,” DriveBC said.

DriveBC has also announced the Coquihalla will be closed in both directions Wednesday (Jan. 8) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. between Merritt and Hope for avalanche control work.

Kelowna International Airport is reporting some delays in arrivals and departures but no cancellations at this point.

Close to 2,000 customers in the Vernon area lost power due to snow on wires or other issues related to the storm this morning, but BC Hydro says most, if not all, of those customers, now have power back.
