As Australia continues to battle with what is being dubbed as one of the worst wildfire seasons in its history, staff at SilverStar Mountain Resort are shoring up support.

“All of our hearts are breaking for what is going on back home, so we decided to do something positive,” a staff member in a video posted on SilverStar’s YouTube page said.

On Wednesday Jan. 8 staff will host a barbecue fundraiser with all proceeds going toward the bushfire fund. Staff, many of which are from Australia, will be selling ‘sausage sizzles’ outside the town hall from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees at the event can also enter into a raffle to win a $300 SilverStar gift basket, a $175 SilverStar fire department sprinkler, Blundstone boots, and some photos from a local photographer.

“SilverStar has very strong connections with Australia, through staff, friends and guests,” Chantelle Deacon, media relations manager, said. “Our thoughts are with the many people impacted by these fires, in Australia and those who are currently far from home.”

Money raised will go toward the Community Enterprise Foundation: National Bushfire Disaster Appeal, an organization capable of distributing funds to affected areas nationwide and WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc.), an organization that rescues and cares for animals affected by the fires.

The wildfires in Australia have charred millions of acres in the country’s New South Wales region, leaving 25 people dead and roughly 2,000 homes destroyed.
