BC Hydro crews restoring power

Jan 2, 2020 | 9:52 AM

According to BC Hydro, crews were on the way Thursday morning to deal with a number of power outages in the Vernon area as well as Coldstream, Lumby and Spallumcheen.

Some customers have been without power since Dec. 31.

Hydro blamed the outages on the New Year’s Eve snowstorm and treacherous road conditions in some areas.

The biggest remaining outage in the Vernon area includes 435 customers east of Richlands Road.

Silver Star Mountain Resort also reported being affected by the outages.

“We have several trees down on both alpine and cross country trails (so) please use extra caution whilst on runs today,” said the resort on its Facebook page.

It also said its gondola was closed for maintenance.

The heavy snowfall led to tens of thousands of customers without power New Year’s Eve throughout the North Okanagan, Shuswap and Thompson regions. It also brought down trees onto power lines.

“Despite poor weather and treacherous road conditions creating challenges for our crews, they have made good progress overnight and have now restored power to the vast majority of customers affected by the snow storm on Tuesday,” the company website said. “Today, crews will be working throughout the day on remaining repairs in hard to access areas near Nakusp and Vernon.

“We appreciate your patience as restoration efforts continue.”

The company issued a similar statement to affected customers in the Shuswap and Thompson regions.
