Private security firm selected for overnight patrols

Oct 30, 2019 | 5:20 AM

A private firm has been chosen to provide night-time seasonal security in problem areas of Vernon.

City council received seven bids to provide the service, and went with the low bid for $33,125 submitted by Seasonal Security.

The firm will patrol areas “subject to petty crime, as identified by RCMP and Bylaws,” seven days a week from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. from May 1 to September 30, 2020.

“The agency shall deploy one security personnel in one security vehicle [for the times listed above] including all holidays and in accordance with WorkSafe BC and the Employment Standards Act,” said a report to council from Chris Sheel, Manager of Procurement Services.

Private security can’t enforce city bylaws or enter onto private property, and can only make RCMP aware of situations.

A local business group has questions about the scope of the service.

“The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce supports private security downtown to enhance the coverage of city bylaws staff and the RCMP, but points out that there are safety concerns in other commercial areas of Vernon,” said a release from the Chamber.

The original motion from council back in June to investigate the costs of seasonal private security, stated the locations patrolled by the firm “may include downtown, but are not limited to downtown.”
