Restaurant chain supports Amanda Todd Legacy

A Vernon-based restaurant chain is helping to end the stigma around mental health, one wing at a time.

Wings Restaurants and Pubs will donate $1 from every order of their Pumpkin Spice wings to the Amanda Todd Legacy from Oct. 1-14.

The Amanda Todd Legacy was founded by Carol Todd in memory of her daughter who took her life in Port Coquitlam on October 10, 2012, after years of suffering from mental health related symptoms due to bullying, cyber abuse, and harassment.

Jeff Perham, Director of Marketing & Business Development at Wings, said they hope ‘Say It With Wings’ fundraiser will be a conversation starter around mental illness.

“It’s no secret that there is an ongoing stigma around mental illness and people who suffer in silence. Everyone I know is either directly or indirectly affected by mental illness. A good conversation starts with good food. I think this program will really resonate with our staff and guests. I’d love to see this as something we build on each year and include as one of our annual community programs,” said Perham.

The event is strategically planned to run alongside the Amanda Todd Legacy Online Auction, which helps support several local programs that encourage mental wellness and healthy living, particularly in youth.

Additionally, both events run through October 10, which is not only World Mental Health Day, but also the day Amanda passed away.

The legacy has created a global campaign of awareness called ‘Light Up Purple’ for World Mental Health Day. This date falling on October 10 each year which provides a remembrance of Amanda and her voice.

“I read over the ‘Say it with Wings’ proposal and immediately got goosebumps because I thought it would be a breakthrough in getting more awareness out there for mental health, which we know now is so important,” said Carol Todd.

The restaurant chain has also created a special cocktail, the Purple Snowflake, in memory of Amanda, with a portion of sales also going to the Legacy.

“We want to shine a light on World Mental Health Day, so we are treating each guest wearing purple to a free order of Pumpkin Spice wings on October 10,” stated Perham. “All other guests will get 25 per cent off any flavour of wings, regardless of the colour of their outfit.”

Participating B.C. markets Include: Vernon, Kelowna, West Kelowna, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Richmond, Vancouver, Quesnel, and Terrace.
