Aquatics manager becomes national trainer

Jun 10, 2019 | 2:41 PM

The aquatics manager for the City of Vernon has a new title to add to his name.

Gary Lefebvre is now one of 14 national trainers in the province certified by the Lifesaving Society of Canada.

He was recognized by the mayor at the council meeting on Monday.

“This thing of learning to swim is a lifesaving issue so I really take my hat off to him,” Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said.

According to the Lifesaving Society of Canada, the goal of a national trainer is to prepare candidates for leadership roles and ensure aquatics programs are taught with quality and provide support.

Lefebvre has 25 years of experience in aquatics and has worked as a national lifeguard instructor for 15 years.

Prior to the latest award, he received several, including the Barnsley Shield, M.G.Griffiths Award, and Lifesaving Society Teaching Recognition Award.

He will serve as a national trainer for the Thompson-Okanagan region.
