Forum Focuses On Referendum, City Issues

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre will host a town hall forum tonight for the candidates running for Vernon council.

A “Meet & Greet the Candidates” will run from 4:30 to 5:45 pm in the main foyer.

“Voters will have the chance to speak one-to-one with candidates and will be invited to submit their questions or comments on the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre (GVCC) referendum or their uppermost municipal election issues for council candidates to address in Part Two of Monday night’s forum,” says Jim Harding, executive director of the Centre.

Part one of the program starts at 6 pm with an information presentation by the Regional District of North Okanagan’s Community Services manager Tannis Nelson who will discuss the three most frequently asked questions.

“Council candidates will also be given the chance to ask questions or comment on the referendum and the GVCC project itself,” adds Harding.

RDNO is seeking consent from voters in Vernon, Coldstream, and Areas B and C to borrow up to 25 million dollars for a multi purpose cultural complex in downtown Vernon.

“As a co-beneficiary of a similar referendum in 1999, and now a major part of the regional cultural community, we believed it was fitting to host this forum, both for voter information and Council candidates,” says Harding.

Following a break to allow the public to submit their referendum or election questions, the final part of the forum will see council candidates respond to municipal election issues from pre-forum submissions, followed by priority issues submitted by attending members of the public.

The forum is scheduled to end at 8:30 pm.

Special guest moderator will be Duane Grandbois of 107.5 Beach Radio Vernon.
