RCMP Cutting After Hours Dispatch

The head of the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP says a service change with night time calls to police will affect all the larger detachments in the South East District.

Superintendent Shawna Baher says the dispatching is currently done through their communications centre in Kelowna.

“For a long period of time, they have been taking on additional duties that aren’t really job descriptions that they had, so when they looked at their overall mandate, when they looked at everything they were doing, they had to say ‘Are we able to able to do all this additional stuff that is past our mandate?” Baher told Beach Radio News.

Baher (pictured) says the actual answers should come from the South East District, but from what she knows, it means the after-hours service will no longer fall in the funding formula for larger 24-hour detachments.
