Compost Record Set At Fair

Close to 15-thousand pounds of organic waste was generated at this year’s Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong.

That includes waste from the food court, paper towels and plates, wooden cutlery, and compostable plastic cups.

All of it will be composted under a program by Spa Hills Compost, with help from IPE staff and the Girl Guides, now into its fourth year.

The amount diverted from landfills this year, 14,912 pounds, was about five thousand pounds more than last year.

“The IPE has been working with Spa Hills over the last few years to drastically reduce waste at the Fair, with much success,” says Keli Westgate, sales and marketing manager for Spa Hills Compost. “In 2015 the Fair diverted 1250 pounds, in 2016, 6910 pounds, and in 2017, over 10,000 pounds.”

“With the huge wildfires in BC again this year, we need compost to help our agricultural soils retain water” adds Westgate. “It’s critical to hold moisture in the soil in our dry region and using compost also increases local food security by adding nutrients to soil.”
