Quiring Seeks Third term

A veteran member of Vernon council will be seeking another four year term.

Brian Quiring has announced he will seek a third term, but he says it wasn’t an easy decision.

“My platform has always been economic development, working for the development and building industry, and I’m going to keep doing that. I thought maybe somebody would come forward and want to take on that role, but certainly that’s my area of expertise and I’ve been very effective,” Quiring tells Beach Radio News.

Quiring — who is an architect and business owner — topped the councillor polls four years ago.

He took some heat from the public for his initial stance on supporting a ban on commercial shopping carts on public property in the city, which he later reversed, and voted against the proposed bylaw.

Quiring (pictured) says he now realizes he doesn’t have the skill set to deal with difficult social issues.

“I waded into those waters. I’m going to leave those discussions, and those solutions, to people that are much better equipped than me. I’ll still participate in the discussions, but my role is to continue economic development and ensure that people are investing in this community.”

Quiring feels the situation with the street entrenched population is a lot better than a year ago, with a number of housing units opening soon.

Meantime, Juliette Cunningham won’t seek another term, saying its time to spend more time with her family.

Catherine Lord has also said she won’t run again, while Dalvir Nahal will run for a second term.

Scott Anderson hasn’t said if he will run again, and Mayor Akbal Mund says he will announce if he’ll seek a second term later this week.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Art Gourley had filed papers to run for Vernon mayor, while Kelly Fehr and Don Jefcoat had filed for councillor.
