No Fire At Pre Grad Party

Sep 5, 2017 | 11:07 AM

A pre-grad party on the night before school resumes has been a tradition with some Greater Vernon students the last few years.

However, with the extreme fire danger this year, emergency officials were concerned about the students having a bonfire at one event planned for 4 kilometres along the King Edward Forest Service Road Monday night.

Coldstream Fire chief Dave Sturgeon says they sent a truck up to the site, and found no fire.

“We didn’t see any evidence they were going to light something, so the RCMP basically just dispersed them and I’m not sure where they went after that,” says Sturgeon.

Sturgeon says due to the fire danger, the students appeared to be using lights and generators instead of a fire.

“I think there was enough awareness, their parents probably talked to them or whatever. We didn’t see a pile of pallets or anything like that, so I think they were just going to use lights and generators.”

Sturgeon says there were reports that up to a couple hundred kids could attend at the party.
