Mussel Watch Pays Off

Over 28-thousand watercraft coming into BC have been inspected for invasive mussels this year.

Chris Doyle from the BC Conservation Service says over 16-hundred were identified as high risk.

“Of the 28 thousand watercraft inspected, seventeen were confirmed to have adult invasive mussels and they came from Ontario, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, New York and Quebec.”

Those vessels could have done major damage.

“They were destined for the Lower Mainland, Okanagan, Kootenays, Thompson Nicola, Vancouver island and Alaska. And the program received advanced notice of fifteen of the seventeen mussel found boats from other jurisdictions.”

Doyle says North Okanagan officers recently seized a boat in Sicamous that was contaminated by mussels after a driver ignored inspection stations in Alberta and BC.

The driver has been charged under the Wildlife Act.
